On 11 June, Julie Schmitt returned to Dresden University of Technology to speak in the LL.M. IP International Studies in Intellectual Property Law and Data Law programme. Together with Christian Steudtner (EUIPO), she explored EU trade mark opposition proceedings from two complementary perspectives: private practice and decision‑taking inside the Office.

Building on Julie’s earlier lecture on Community Design Law for the LL.M. students, the session focused on how legal principles in EU trade mark and design law translate into real‑world case handling. Looking at the same proceedings from both sides created a unique opportunity to discuss not only the applicable rules, but also how arguments are built, assessed and reflected in EUIPO decisions.

Umami Law is committed to contributing to this kind of practice‑oriented academic exchange. For our team, teaching is a way to share insights from daily opposition work while also engaging with the questions and ideas that shape the next generation of IP practitioners.

Julie extends her warm thanks to Jana Lutter and the entire LL.M. team in Dresden, as well as to Katharina Kaesling and Anne Lauber‑Rönsberg for their organisation and hospitality, and to the students for their curiosity, thoughtful questions and active participation throughout the session. It is always a pleasure to help build bridges between academic learning and day‑to‑day IP practice.

We look forward to continuing this collaboration and to returning to Dresden next year.
